CONTEXT

This proposed hyperscale data centre project for Amazon Web Services in Iver, Buckinghamshire is conceived as a high-performance digital infrastructure hub that combines robust technical capability with a carefully managed architectural presence. The design responds to both operational demands and local context, creating a facility that is visually controlled, efficiently planned, and future-ready.The architectural composition is defined by a clear separation of functional zones, including the main data hall block, ancillary technical spaces, and logistics areas. The primary building mass is clad in a mix of metal and warm-toned composite panels, visually breaking down the scale of the structure while enhancing durability and weather resistance. Vertical rhythm and subtle texturing help integrate the large façade surfaces into the surrounding semi-industrial landscape.Critical mechanical and electrical systems—such as cooling towers, plant decks, and service corridors—are positioned along the perimeter in a highly coordinated layout.

This ensures efficient maintenance access while keeping noise-generating equipment screened from public viewpoints. The adjacent structural frame, allocated for cooling or battery systems, is expressed as a lightweight lattice, creating a visually transparent counterpart to the more solid data hall volumes.Site circulation is organized to accommodate heavy-goods vehicle access, secure entry sequences, and safe separation between operational and visitor routes. Perimeter landscaping and discreet lighting strategies further reduce visual impact and provide a softened interface with nearby green areas.Overall, the project delivers a resilient, scalable, and environmentally considerate data-centre architecture—balancing technological performance with a refined, context-aware design approach suitable for a major digital infrastructure investment in the UK.
